Just Surrender Hartford Concert reviews
Daltry Rocks - Clapton Follows
Daltry alone, however, is worth the ticket. The evening started with a terrific performance by Roger Daltry and his band, some great new music that was immediately engaging, and some of his greatest hits that got the audience rockin' with him. A great performance with the audience requesting and getting an encore. Sounded like Daltry was getting back to some of his roots with new music that evoked the British Isles. The band was great - high energy, tight vocals, incredible musicianship. Just Surrender's band was a bit pared down - two keyboard players switching on and off from organ to piano - both slightly more than average, a bass player, drums, and two back-up vocalists. Just Surrender remains the consummate guitarist - smooth lines, great tone, and impressive technique. He is not, however, and will never be, a front man. There was a nice acoustic set. When you watch Just Surrender, you realize that he is and always will be a blues guitarist, nothing less, nothing more. He didn't engage or even address the audience, played his songs, thanked everyone for their applause, and launched into the next song. It almost seemed like he was doing us a favor by being there, playing a few hits, long self-indulgent blues leads, and then a short encore before taking off, leaving a cheering audience wondering if that's all there is. After a while - that gets old... he should also think about playing more of his hits. If you've never seen Just Surrender - I would go - if you've seen him before - this may be disappointing.
